Oops!

Jonah receives God’s instruction – for the second time – to go to Nineveh to deliver His message of condemnation. This time Jonah obeys, goes straight to the great city and begins to declare what God has told him to say. Because of the Ninevites sin, the city and all its inhabitants will be destroyed in 40 days. Before Jonah gets very far with his work, the Ninevites believe God’s message, humble themselves and throw themselves on the mercy of God. Seeing their genuine repentance, the Lord turns aside from His intention to destroy the city. What can we learn about the nature of sin and punishment, repentance and grace from God’s dealings with the Ninevites?
