News of Jesus’ ministry provoke His earthly brothers and even His mother, to draw the conclusion that He had lost His mind and that it was time for them to intervene. Alongside this the scribes seek to discredit Jesus by saying that His ability to cast out demons came from the devil. Jesus immediately nips this accusation in the bud by pointing out how illogical it would be for the devil to be attacking himself and that in order to defeat the devil’s servants you would have to be stronger than the devil. Jesus goes further in saying that the sin of wilfully denying the work of the Holy Spirit is a sin which cannot be forgiven. The chapter ends with Jesus explaining the greater significance of spiritual relationships, to believers, over those they have with their earthly relatives.
