Jesus gathers the crowd around Him and then tells them, in contrast to the dietary laws of the Jews, that nothing that goes into a man or woman defiles them. Instead it is what comes from the heart that is the source of our defilement before God. Later, speaking to His disciples, Jesus goes into specific detail with regard to exactly what these sins of thought and action are that make us so unclean.
