Matthew 10:5-23.

Having called His disciples, Jesus briefs them before sending them on a mission to preach the message that the kingdom of heaven is within touching distance for all those who want to receive it. The disciples are to announce this to the ‘lost sheep of the house of Israel’ to begin with, as God’s historically chosen people should welcome this good news of the arrival of God’s long-promised kingdom. Jesus gives His messengers authority to do miracles to prove that they are from God, doing everything without expecting payment, but trusting to God’s provision for their welfare. However the disciples – and Christians throughout history – are to expect opposition and persecution from many they will meet when they seek to proclaim the gospel. Jesus says that this hostility will come from those in the highest authority down to those closest to us, in our families. But we can be assured, as Jesus says, that ‘those who endure to the end will be saved.’
