The Pharisees return to challenge Jesus by asking Him to justify His disciples not washing their hands before eating. A strict requirement of the religious Jew’s traditions assembled over time from the period of their captivity in Babylon. Jesus replies with His own question asking them to account for their elevation of ‘tradition’ over God’s commandments. In particular the practice of the Pharisees to keep money, they claimed to have dedicated to God, for themselves rather than spend it providing for their parents according to the fifth commandment. As far as hand washing is concerned Jesus says that it is not what goes into a person that does harm but what comes from their heart through their words.
