Matthew 19:30-20:16.

The final verse of chapter 19, in our Bible, should be read with the first sixteen verses of the next, as it provides the first of two ‘bookends’ to a parable Jesus gave to His disciples about the kingdom of heaven. Using the picture of a vineyard owner recruiting and generously paying labourers to work among his vines, Jesus reminds His disciples, and us, that it is God who redeems who He wants when He wants. The generous reward – forgiveness and eternal salvation – which we haven’t earned, God gives to all who He brings into His kingdom. Therefore the disciples should not regard themselves as worthy of any greater reward than the rest of their brothers and sisters in Christ.
