Matthew 21:12-22.

Entering the temple, Jesus once again clears it of all those engaged in the exploitation of people coming to make sacrifices. As Jesus reminds them, the house of the Lord is to be a house of prayer where the sacred order of behaviour, designed to focus worshippers’ attention on God, is to be maintained. After staying overnight in Bethany Jesus returns to the city, on the way passing a fig tree that should have produced fruit but hasn’t. In causing it to wither immediately at His words, Jesus gives a dramatic illustration of the fate of those who fail to produce spiritual fruit despite having a unique spiritual heritage.
