The chief priests and senior leaders of the Jewish people confronted Jesus in the temple demanding to know by what authority He was teaching. Jesus responds by asking them a question, by what authority, do the leaders think, was John baptising those who came to him in the desert. Faced with what was to them an insoluble dilemma, the chief priests could not provide an answer.
Jesus then expands on His criticism of the Jewish leaders by giving them two parables. The first exposes their failure to heed God’s final prophet, John, and the second condemns them for generations of abusing God’s messengers culminating in what they were about to do to His Son. The chief priests and Pharisees got the message and would have laid hands on Jesus then and there if they hadn’t been afraid of the reaction of the crowds.
