Another prominent group in the religious and political life of the Jews approach Jesus with a theoretical situation that they were used to using to win debates with their religious rivals. This group, the Sadducees, based their beliefs solely on the first five books of the Bible, the pentateuch, and as a consequence of their interpretation of its teaching, did not believe in the resurrection of the dead. They asked Jesus to explain who would be the husband of a woman who had been, in the eyes of the law, rightfully married to seven brothers, who had died, once they were all resurrected. Jesus revealed that there would be no need for the continuation of marriage in Heaven before going on to challenge the Sadducees disbelief in the resurrection with a statement from God in Exodus where He said that He was, present tense, the God of Abraham Isaac and Jacob. How could God be the God of those who were not alive? Jesus asked them.
