A question from someone who was genuinely looking for an answer, gives Jesus the opportunity to demonstrate to the Jewish leaders that His message was no different from that given by God through His servant Moses. Asked to identify the most important command of ‘The Law’, Jesus quotes from Deuteronomy 6:5, a passage that forms the beginning of The Shema prayer recited twice daily by jews. ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ Jesus then adds ‘loving your neighbour as yourself’ as the second and equal command of God. After consistently failing to catch Him out, the religious leaders decide not to ask Jesus any further questions.
