Matthew’s narrative of the final events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus begins by cutting between what is happening to Jesus and Peter’s descent into denying his master. The Jewish religious leaders convene a late night court to try Jesus for blasphemy but struggle to find any witnesses to establish their charges. Eventually Caiaphas puts Jesus under oath to confirm that He is the Christ which Jesus does. This is all His accusers need to satisfy themselves that Jesus deserves death. Meanwhile Peter, who is on the edge of these events, is challenged as to his association with Jesus. Peter denies that he knows Christ but as he does so the third time the cock crows and he remembers that Jesus had warned him he would deny Him, and Peter breaks down in tears of regret.
