Jesus is now taken to be tried by Pilate, the Roman governor of Judea. But before documenting this, Matthew moves our attention back to Judas who is overcome with remorse for his actions but cannot escape from his guilt. In taking his own life Judas it seems, recognises that the death sentence falsely passed on Jesus should be his to bear. After hearing the charges of the Jewish leaders, and Jesus’ response, Pilate is convinced of His innocence but seems unable to wash his hands of his responsibility for the death sentence on Jesus.
