As soon as Pilate releases Barabbas Jesus’ fate is sealed, and He begins the process that will result in His death. After being scourged and humiliated by the Roman garrison Jesus is forced to begin to carry His cross to the site just outside Jerusalem where He will be crucified. Because Jesus has been so weakened by His treatment, a bystander, Simon from Cyrene in North Africa, is forced by the soldiers to carry Jesus’ cross for Him. Eventually Jesus is crucified between two criminals, one of whom believes in Christ and finds salvation, while bystanders continue to hurl abuse. After about three hours of unnatural darkness Jesus gives up His life and dies. Immediately the veil in the Holy of Holies, in the Temple, is torn from top to bottom signifying that access to God is now open to all who come to Him.
