Oops!

Christ having died, Matthew now describes in detail what happens to Jesus’ body. The wealthy and well connected Joseph of Arimathea comes forward to identify himself with Jesus and to beg Pilate to give him Jesus’ body to bury. Putting the body into the tomb he had prepared for himself, Joseph’s actions, along with those of Nicodemus, puts them permanently outside the religious and social life of the Jewish elite.
