Matthew, along with Luke and Mark, records the healing of a paralytic man who was lowered through the roof of a house by his friends. Showing the remarkable lengths that the man’s friends were prepared to go to to get him to Jesus. The man they were confident would be able to heal him. However Matthew, in his retelling of these events, emphasises the significance of the priorities that Jesus’ had in forgiving the man’s sins first before dealing with his disability. Some among the scribes listening, recognising that only God can forgive sin, considered Jesus’ words blasphemous but by following up His words of forgiveness with miraculous words of healing, Jesus once again drew attention to His deity.
