Matthew 9:14-26.

Jesus is asked about fasting once again, this time by the remaining disciples of John the Baptist. Like the Pharisees, these men saw fasting as a sign of religious virtue and found it strange that Jesus’ disciples did not observe this rite as the followers of other teachers did. Jesus uses the example of the behaviour of the bridegroom’s friends at a wedding to explain that while He is with them His disciples rejoice in His presence and therefore have no need to fast. When Jesus is no longer on Earth it will be appropriate for His followers to fast. The time of the old order is ending and the new covenant is about to be initiated with the death and resurrection of the Messiah, as Jesus illustrates with His analogy of new and old garments and wineskins.
