Oops!

In describing his own decision to follow Jesus, Matthew places little emphasis on the part he played in it. Instead he draws our attention to the message Jesus had for the Pharisees who criticised His association with Matthew’s friends, tax collectors and sinners. Jesus takes the opportunity to remind His critics, and us, that He came to redeem those who recognise their need of a saviour not those who trust in their own good works.
