About CCED

~ back to basics, back to community ~

In 2003 The LORD lead 3 young Pastors to begin a church plant in East Dulwich, South London, called Calvary Chapel South London. From small humble beginnings and meeting in an adventure playground hut, the church became established but didn’t remain planted in East Dulwich for very long, moving to New Cross for a short period, then to North Dulwich, then to Brockley and then on to Lewisham where it is now permanently based.

However during this time, one of the Pastors believed that God had specifically called him to be more active in his community of East Dulwich to which, by that time, he had been reaching out for over 18 years.

Then, on 9th November 2014, coming full circle, Calvary Chapel East Dulwich (CCED) was planted by Patrick Pierre-Powell, his wife Sarah Pierre-Powell and a small team.

It has been a great transition and over the years this community church, by the leading and guidance of the Holy Spirit, has established itself in the community, setting up several outreach ventures to the local community such as family days, community BBQs, youth outreach nights, youth trips, along with the regular teaching of God’s word every Sunday morning.

As well as it’s church service every Sunday morning, CCED has weekly prayer meetings, men’s breakfast and women’s meeting.

CCED’s children’s church caters for 3 – 10 year olds and the youth group for 11 – 17 year olds, on Sundays going through a biblical curriculum. All leaders are DBS checked. There is also a space provided for parents & carers with babies and toddlers.

Church members also facilitate mid-week local community youth projects.

As the Lord, by His Spirit, leads them, CCED continues in its outreach to the local community and to obey its part in the great commission…

“ Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…” (Matthew 28:19-20).

Our History

~ how Calvary Chapel began ~

In 1965, Pastor Chuck Smith began his ministry at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa with just twenty-five people. From the beginning, Pastor Chuck welcomed all, young and old, without judgment, placing his emphasis on the teaching of the Word of God. His simple, yet sound, expositional biblical approach has helped millions better understand God’s Word.

With a sincere concern for the lost, Pastor Chuck and Kay Smith made room in the church and their home for a generation of hippies

and surfers; generating a movement of the Holy Spirit that spread from the West Coast to the East Coast, and now, throughout the world.

What began as a small local church has now grown into an international ministry of over 1600 fellowships throughout the world, all in the last 40 years.

What We Believe

We Believe the Bible to be the inspired, infallible, authoritative, and inerrant Word of God. (2Timothy 3:15-17, 2Peter 1:21)

We Believe there is one God, eternally existing in three persons: the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:1, Deuteronomy 6:4, Matthew 28:19, John 10:30)

We Believe in the deity of Christ (John 10:33); His virgin birth (Isaiah 7:14, Matthew 1:23, Luke 1:34-35); His sinless life (Hebrews 4:15, 7:26); His miracles (John 2:11); His vicarious and atoning death (1Corinthians 15:3, Ephesians 1:7, Hebrews 2:9); His resurrection (John 11:25, 1Corinthians 15:4); His ascension to the right hand of the Father (Mark 16:19); His personal return to earth in power and glory. (Acts 1:11, Revelation 19:11-16)

We Believe in the absolute necessity of regeneration by the Holy Spirit for salvation because of the exceeding sinfulness of the human nature, and that all are justified on the single ground of faith in the shed blood of Christ, and that only by God’s grace through faith alone are we saved. (John 3:16-19; John 5:24, Romans 3:23; Romans 5:8-9, Ephesians 2:8-10, Titus 3:5)

We Believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; those who are saved unto the resurrection of life, and those who are not unto the resurrection of damnation. (John 5:28-29)

We Believe in the spiritual unity of the believers in our Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 8:9, 1Corinthians 12:12-13, Galatians 3:26-28)

We Believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a godly life. (Romans 8:13-14, 1 Corinthians 3:16; 1Corinthians 6:19-20, Ephesians 4:30; Ephesians 5:18)

We Believe that we as Christians are called to be examples of the love of God in this world. (John 13:35, I John 4:16-17)

Pastor Patrick Pierre-Powell

Patrick Pierre-Powell

Lead Pastor

The Lord Jesus by His grace opened my eyes to His glorious salvation at the age of 23. At this stage of my life I was on quest to find answers and meaning to my existence and thought I was being spiritual by having a fleeting exploration into different religions and generally trying to be spiritually conscious whilst maintaining my appetite for all the social trappings and vices which I thought would bring me contentment.

Interestingly I didn’t take Christianity into consideration, Jesus wasn’t even on my radar but one day the reality of who Jesus is changed my whole perspective of life.

To be confronted by the real Jesus and not a stain glassed image of who I thought He was rocked my world and has been challenging me ever since.

We Agree

~ with the Apostles Creed ~

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, And born of the virgin Mary, Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, died and was buried.

He descended into hell. On the third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, The holy Christian Church, The communion of saints, The forgiveness of sins, The resurrection of the body, And the life everlasting.

Amen
